Fix IPTV buffering step by step

Buffering has four possible causes: your Wi-Fi, your internet line, the stream server, or the player. This method finds which one in about ten minutes.

Step 1 — Is the stream alive?

$ iptv-toolkit check playlist.m3u -n 20

If most channels are DEAD or TIMEOUT, stop here: the problem is the service or your account (expired, too many connections, wrong link). Nothing on your side will fix it.

Step 2 — Speed to the stream on cable

Plug a laptop into the router with an Ethernet cable, then:

$ iptv-toolkit speed "CHANNEL-URL" -s 20
QualityNeeds aboutWith 50% margin
SD (480p)3 Mbps4.5 Mbps
HD (720p)5 Mbps7.5 Mbps
Full HD (1080p)10 Mbps15 Mbps
4K (2160p)25 Mbps37.5 Mbps

Multiply by the number of screens watching at the same time.

Step 3 — Same test on Wi-Fi, from where the TV is

If the cable result is fine but Wi-Fi is much lower, the fix is at home: move the router, use the 5 GHz band, add a mesh point or a powerline adapter, or run a cable to the TV box.

Step 4 — Same test at another time of day

Run step 2 in the morning and again at peak time (around 20:00–22:00). If only the evening is slow, the bottleneck is upstream: your internet provider or the IPTV server. Compare with a normal speed test at the same moment. If the normal test is fast and the stream test is slow, the stream server or the route to it is the limit.

Step 5 — The player

Questions

How much speed do I need for IPTV?

As a rule of thumb about 3 Mbps for SD, 5 for HD, 10 for Full HD and 25 for 4K, per screen, plus a 50% margin. Measure the speed to the stream, not to a nearby test server.

Why does IPTV buffer only in the evening?

Evening is peak time for both your internet provider and the IPTV server. Run iptv-toolkit speed at 11:00 and again at 21:00: if only the evening result drops, the bottleneck is upstream, not your home network.

Does a VPN fix IPTV buffering?

Only when your internet provider slows down video traffic. If the speed to the stream is the same with and without the VPN, a VPN will not help and usually adds latency.
